Hot..very hot....

Ok....so we received an inkling of what a Summer day in the arena will be like..with the added benefit of the swamp coolers being off... *phew*... We tried a few new drills this time, talked about the bout that they saw last night, and as usual, had a lot of fun...!

Here are some of the pics of the team:

Getting better all the time...

Skating with these women just get better every practice...I just love em, they are great women. Tonight we did backwards skating, I'm still not very good at backwards crossovers, so I went to the backwards scissors side of the rink. We did a two arm length weaving train, three different stopping drills, falling on two knees and I tried the slide out twice, which is kinda like sliding into first base in baseball. One of my team mates explained to me afterward how to do it without slamming onto my hip.

I'm trying to remember the first new drill we did... Oh yeah...we skated while leaning into the shoulder of a mate, in both directions. And the other new drill was that cool thing I saw the Sac. Girls and Central Coast do at the bout when they ripped around the corners, they pushed out the outside leg to stabilize ourselves.

Thanks to Jodrlicious for footing the effort and the bill for photos last week...I spent the last 10 minutes of practice trying to get the photo CD to work on my laptop - no go (that's two that couldn't be read recently so there may be an issue with my player).

Anywhoozle, I missed the 2 minute sprints and this time was cooler because it was the first time it was done where we attempted to stay together as a pack...I was looking forward to that so I hope we do it again Sunday....I really love the cohesive pack synchronization idea...

Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda skated tonight but chose to do extra homework instead

While we wait for Thursday night, let's have a look at pics from a Raquel Welch movie called Kansas City Bomber, (1972). Synopsis: Roller-derby skater K. C. Carr tries to balance her desire for a happy personal life and her dreams of stardom.

*
I also started reading the WFTDA rulebook tonight...and also reading the book that Girl Haggard gave me called Roller Derby by Catherine Mabe...and learned a lot from both...For instance...we can do something cool with our penalty box and create a funny way to punish the penalized skater...such as, a princess of punishment and spankings...OR something.. :) Also, it's customary it seems to have an after-party with fans...

I learned that the Jammer, but not the Lead Jammer, can pass off the helmet cover to the pivot blocker and then trade positions with her....

Derby Slang: Fishnet burn...the permanant or semi permanant rash when falling while wearing fishnet stockings...

Picture Night!

Tonight we had three cameras and more skaters...very cool... We all put on our team shirts and wow did it make a huge mental difference from the "restructuring" to now...a team beginning to coalesce...we started about 9 or so and did some skating....then drilled with jumps, two knee and one knee falls, and with two runs of 2 minute drills...I really have to have my skates on more times per week...If only my teacher at school would put more weeks of lessons online at once I could get ahead a bit...I'm trying to do backwards crossovers...some girls are really good at that already...We did try a new drill this time of turning from front to back skating with three steps...little tricky when you pay such close attention to the move, because I swear I could do it without thinking in the past...

Having a groovy time with these ladies and skating...

Went to Ed's after practice with the twins and another girl for an ice cold Sierra Nevada....Aaaah....tasted quite nice, despite the rainy night...we're going to do it on the second Thurs. of the month since I have that Fri off....They loaned me a great book with simpler rule explanations and with derby slang....It's called Roller Derby the History and All-Girl Revival of the Greatest Sport on Wheels...by Catherine Mabe. Included in the slang section is: "Blood and Thunder or Queen of the Week: Practice drill in which all skaters take the track and proceed to knock the hell out of each other until only one skater remains standing...

Umm...yeah...I'll get right on that one.. ;)

The rest of the pics are in color...I fucking suck at pictures...never look like myself...Hopefully at least one will come out good like this one at the Sacred City bout...(the 2nd ok photo of me in my life...maybe the third)

And a special Hellooooo to ma fellow derby mistress, K...who likes to read this blog and that made me very happy..! Keep up the good work, Miss K! And thanks! :)

Train kept a-rollin' all night long

Well we're settling down now after the splitting off of the league....

We did some skating and drills and this time P and his father came to watch. This team feels a lot more cohesive for some reason...I have to assume we all magically went to the teams best suited for us...seems like a lot of tall women stayed on the High Country league...

Thursday night is picture night....must get hair cut Thursday...

Feeling nice and hope in my skates...Moving forward with this team...Took on the position of webmistress...Fun Fun Fun... ! :)

No skate. Meet.

Well we've had a shake up in the new league already. Some ladies have moved to a new team, which is owned and operated by themselves, their new name is Mountain Misery Derby Dames and they took that hideous logo (sorry, I never liked the disrespect to nature) with them. I wish them well and I miss my friend with whom I joined derby in February....

Anywhoozle...we had an in-depth meeting to discuss our new three page agreement, our practice times and clearing up all the 'goo' that was spewed by a lot of people. Always good to know both sides, (all sides), of a drama....

By 10:00 I was so tired after sitting around since 6:00 that I went home and began my new duties of webmistress for the league.

The only bummer is that my Zune is not allowed during practice, so I will load it with some music I like and play it on the arena speakers when we're allowed to...

Sunday will be like a brand new thing...looking forward to this starting over type place we're in...
